San Martin is a region and department situated in the northern part of Peru. It is divided into ten provinces and its capital is Moyobamba. The Huallaga River, one of the most important rivers of the region, can be found here.
Gran Pajaten, a ruined settlement overlooking the Montecristo River canyon, is one of the well-known archaeological sites located in San Martin. It is in the world heritage national park, Rio Abiseo National Park, located near Tarapoto which is home to a large number of species of flora and fauna and has more than 30 pre-Columbian archaeological sites.
