About Progreso

Progreso is a coastal city located in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. Situated on the northern coast, it is admired for its beautiful beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and proximity to archaeological sites. Progreso is also a hub for water sports such as jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing. The city boasts a long stretch of sandy beach that extends for kilometers, offering visitors a chance to relax, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy various water activities. The beach is lined with restaurants, bars, and palapas (thatched-roof shelters) where visitors can savor delicious seafood and refreshing drinks. One of the main attractions in Progreso is the longest pier in the country, the Malecón or Progreso Pier. It serves as a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike, offering stunning views of the coastline, fishing opportunities, and a place to enjoy the ocean breeze. Progreso serves as a gateway to various Mayan archaeological sites in the region. One of the most notable sites is Dzibilchaltún, located just a short drive from Progreso. It features the famous Temple of the Seven Dolls and the Xlacah Cenote, a natural sinkhole. Other nearby archaeological sites include Xcambo and Mayapán, which offer insights into the ancient Mayan civilization. The city also provides opportunities to immerse oneself in Yucatecan culture. It hosts festivals and events throughout the year, showcasing traditional music, dance, and cuisine. Visitors can indulge in local delicacies such as cochinita pibil (marinated pork), panuchos, salbutes, and the refreshing drink called horchata.
